Malay Cultural Society

The new executive committee for the year 2008 was elected in January this year. Regular practices were held on Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 6 pm and Friday day from 3pm till 5pm pm. Members were given training and exposure in Malay traditional and contemporary dance. It also offers training in other forms of cultural activities such as the increasingly popular dikir barat, kompang, drama and debate. Our members have shown excellent cooperation and enthusiasm during practices and performances.

A major event last year was the Singapore Youth Festival, where 30 of our Malay dancers took part in the SYF in the contemporary dance section. Our dancers trained hard with practices increasing from three to five times a week, especially during the last few weeks before the competition. As a result, we walked away with a bronze award. Besides dance competitions we also took part in Artistic Poetry competitions organized by NUS Malay Cultural Society.

To sharpen our students oratorical skills, our members took part in oratorical and debating competitions organized by Berita Harian. In the National Inter-School Debate Organised by Berita Harian in 2008, our student, Hadiwiputra of 4 Opal won the Best Speaker Award.

In the literary field, our members were equally active. Students literary works were documented annually in the form of a publication called Cetusan Minda a joint publication with the schools within the cluster. We also compiled our very own bulletin called Permata to promote creative writing among our members.

The MCS members not only took part in competitions, but also performed at various school and external functions such as the Chinese New Year Concert, Yew Tee CC Hari Raya Concert, Leng Kee CC Hari Raya Concert and National Day Concert. Our members also rendered services to the community by performing a dance at Hongkah North Residents Day. With dedication and enthusiasm shown by our members, we look forward to greater heights of achievement, knowing the best is yet to be.
